Burnley vs Manchester City Premier League match preview
Manchester City face Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday in their penultimate away match of the campaign.
City moved back to the top of the Premier League table on Wednesday night after beating rivals Manchester United 2-0 at Old Trafford. City looked a little nervy in the first half but goals from Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane in the second period secured three crucial points for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Liverpool’s 5-0 rout of Huddersfield turned back the pressure on Manchester City. Jurgen Klopp’s side are now two points ahead but have played a game more.
This means that if City win their next three matches, against Burnley, Leicester and Brighton, they will be crowned champions of England once again.
Even the smallest of slip ups would hand the advantage back to Liverpool, who are expected to win their two remaining league matches against Newcastle and Wolves.
Burnley reached the coveted 40-point mark on Monday night after holding Chelsea to a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge. All four goals were scored in the opening 25 minutes of the match.
An excellent volley from Jeff Hendrick gave Burnley the lead early on but Chelsea were 2-1 up six minutes later. Ashley Barnes then equalised for Burnley, who are now all but safe from relegation.
After Cardiff failed to win their match with Fulham on Saturday, Burnley are already mathematically safe before Sunday’s kick-off. Burnley’s final two matches are against Everton and Arsenal.
With Sean Dyche in charge, and after a trying season where at one point relegation looked like, the pressure being off for Burnley could well galvanise them.
Burnley and Manchester City have met nine times in Premier League history, with City winning five and losing one.
Manchester City were 5-0 winners in the reverse fixture at the Eithad Stadium in October. Sergio Aguero, Bernardo Silva, Fernandinho, Leroy Sane and Riyad Mahrez all found the back of the net.
City won by the exact same scoreline when the sides met in the fourth round of the FA Cup in January.

Sean Dyche made no substitutions against Chelsea, so one or two players may be in need of a rest. The likes of Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Robbie Brady will be hoping to benefit from any rotation.
Phil Bardsley comes back into contention after recovering from a thigh laceration, putting Matthew Lowton’s place at risk.
Peter Crouch and Aaron Lennon remain sidelined while Steven Defour is a long-term absentee.

Manchester City team news vs Burnley
Unlike Liverpool, Manchester City do not have a midweek European fixture to consider, so Pep Guardiola is free to field his strongest available eleven.
City may be short of options in the base of midfield as Fernandinho and Ilkay Gundogan are both major doubts.
Fernandinho was forced off against Man United after twisting his knee attempting to block a shot, while Gundogan took a “big knock” late on in the match.
Both players will be assessed before Sunday. Fernandinho will reportedly miss out and could be out of the remainder of the campaign. Much could rest on Gundogan for the final three Premier League matches.
Bernardo Silva is capable of playing in a deeper midfield role, as is Fabian Delph, although the latter has not started a Premier League match since December.
Kevin de Bruyne is sidelined with a muscle injury although Guardiola hopes to have the midfielder available before the end of the season.
Club captain Vincent Kompany is not expected to start after completing 90 minutes at Old Trafford. One of Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones will likely partner Aymeric Laporte at the back.
Riyad Mahrez has been an unused substitute in each of City’s last three Premier League matches and will probably have to settle for a place on the bench again.
Back-up goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is a long-term injury absentee.
